At what
age can
my child
begin
music
lessons?
The
earlier
a child
can be
exposed
to
music,
the
better!
Music
has so
many
benefits
beyond
just the
learning
of an
instrument.
The most
common
age for
kids to
start is
around 5
or 6.
Music is
based
around
numbers
and
letters
and kids
around
this age
are very
familiar
and
knowledgeable
on these
subjects.
This can
make
learning
music a
little
easier.
We do
have
private
music
lesson
students
as young
as 3!
Children
of this
age are
wonderful
little
sponges,
but it
can be a
bit of a
challenge
to keep
them
sitting
still
for 30
minutes!
We’ve
actually
had some
start at
20
minutes
and
build to
30
minutes.
We
believe
that the
age they
are
motivated
and
excited
to play
is the
perfect
time to
start!
Do you teach adults?
Yes!
Actually
we have
quite a
few
taking
lessons
with us!
Some are
parents
who were
inspired
by their
kids
taking
music
lessons.
Many had
taken
lessons
as a
child
and
wished
they had
never
quit!
Others
had
always
wanted
to take
lessons
but just
didn’t
get the
chance.
Anyone of any age who is willing to put in the effort can learn! Kids really love it when their parents are taking lessons too! Plus, you are then more knowledgeable to help your kids between their weekly lessons.
How often are lessons?
Usually students do one 30 or 45 minute lesson per instrument once a week, but we adjust lesson lengths to fit the needs of each student. Some students really like a 45 minute lesson once a week because it’s a little more relaxed. More advanced students sometimes need a 45 or 60 minute lesson to get through all of their material. Most commonly, though, it’s 30 minutes once a week to start with.
How do you structure your lessons?
Each of our teachers has a different teaching style, but all are based in a well-rounded curriculum built from music fundamentals. Lessons include theory, technique, lesson songs, performance songs, supplemental songs and activities based on the student’s interests! Lesson plans are customized for that particular student’s learning style, musical interests and goals.
Can I take lessons on more than one instrument at once?
Yes! Piano is a wonderful instrument to begin with. It easily teaches the fundamentals and basics of music and provides a strong musical knowledge base that helps students learn any other instrument! Many schools require a certain amount of piano before starting some instruments. Taking piano lessons (or any instrument) while taking lessons on another instrument really compliments the other, reinforcing the same musical elements in different ways.
Do you have recitals?
South of the River Music has two recitals a year, a holiday recital and a spring recital. Recitals are not mandatory, but they are a lot of fun! South of the River Music works with our teachers to make our recitals a fun, exciting, encouraging and often inspiring experience!
Do you also offer lessons in a studio setting?
Yes! We currently have teachers who teach private lessons in studio settings all over the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Please let us know if that is an option you would be interested in!
